Mini Planer Jointer : Fence

This document is part of the mini planer jointer project. The fence comprises three elements. The main fence slides along the track attached to the planer base and enables the user to choose what part of the working tool will be used. If needed the back guard covers the full working tool. The fence also glides and locks along its support making easier the planing or edging operation as well as putting away. Lastly the fence extension allows a longer surface but also strengthens the whole guide. The extension is put away by folding up its two rear elements then laying on the planer bed.

Overview

The tricky part of the main fence is probably its metal support. In order to keep the fence right the upside-down U profile needs to slide close to the wooden track. A countersunk bolt and a wing-nut lock the metal U that also holds the outfeed table. On the other hand a metal plate should be wedged at a 90° angle and allows two other functions. the first one let the fence plate glide along the tables some centimetres. The second one is related to the rebating ability of the planer that needs to shift the fence plate from the right to the left side of its metal support. Whatever the fence position the back guard cover the working tool behind the fence and should be lifted up before putting away. Lastly a dado will accommodate the extension.

Fence

The two purposes of the fence extension are the strength of the whole fence plate as well as making it longer. The two rear attachments aim to lock the fence on the infeed table and help for the keeping of a square angle. Booth can be folded up. The extension is closely related to the infeed table and moves up and down as the table does, thanks to its tongue that slides along the main fence dado.
