Sanding Drum for Spindle Moulder

I looked for a sanding drum about Ø80mm in diameter that should allow for the removal and replacement of sleeves without tool. I would have liked to have made my own one but didn't find any convenient sleeve fastening meeting my previous wish. Eventually I bought the below drum sander that proved so efficient that I thought about extended uses. As matter of interest the dust collector shown below is merely the modified ring fence.

Overview

The manufacturer engraved 3000 rpm maxi in the cast aluminium head and the lowest speed of the spindle moulder was 4200 rpm but the variable frequency drive brought a perfect solution enabling for speed reduction so that the abrasive could run between 400 and 600 meters per minute and beyond related to needs.

Tooling

Housing the sanding drum with the regular fence turned the spindle moulder into a good edge sander that suck up nearly all the dust as you may read in that document.

Edge Sander

Used in conjunction with guides rings, that sanding drum has now become a versatile tool that enables odd shapes to be machined and the bowl shown in the top picture is one amongst some others. No need of a lathe of course. But roughly shaping hard wood demands rough grit that no supplier was able to deliver. So I had to make my own sleeves as described in that paper.

Sleeve Making

The sanding drum could be used for sanding thinner and thinner as you may read here.
