Sanding Drum Sleeve Making

Room is a constant concern in my little shop and sleeves were delivered such way that I could store only one box of eight sleeves. On the other hand I wanted 40 grit sleeves that retailers couldn't deliver. Therefore it remained the sole solution of reusing sleeves.

Overview

From there the whole thing was about dressing worn sleeves. A 475x75mm sanding belt fully covered the sanding drum and DIY stores commonly supplied that dimension in various grits. I made a template where the bevel length equalled the sleeve diameter so that making easy the first cut of the sanding belt.

Template

I drew along the template and roughly cut the first bevel then checked and corrected the bevel before properly cutting along an aluminium angle.

Sanding Belt Cut

I cast the pre-calculated diagonal and the second bevel then cut to complete the sleeve. As you may see below there was hardly any waste.

Complete Cut

Dressing the worn sleeve was performed in four steps with cyano glue. Firstly I stuck the first bevel with much care, leaving the tip then laid a glue drop for about two square centimetres and covered the sleeve body. I completed with the second bevel and the two spikes taking care they could not stay in the way neither go away.

You may see another use of that cutting technique reading the sanding table document.
